JAPAN – Unemployment Rate Remains Steady in May

Japan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 2.4% in May 2019, steady compared to April 2019, according to data from Statistics Japan.
On a non-seasonally adjusted basis, the unemployment rate fell by 0.2% when compared to the previous month and increased by 0.1% compared to May 2018.
The number of unemployed persons in May 2019 was 1.65 million, an increase of 70,000 or 4.4% from the previous year.
Japan’s employment rate stood at 60.7%, an increase of 0.4% compared to the previous year. The number of employed persons in May 2019 was 67.32 million, an increase of 340,000 or 0.5% from the previous year.
The labour force participation rate stood at 62.2% in May, up 0.4% from the previous year.
Meanwhile, the job availability ratio stood at 1.62 in May, down from 1.63 in April, which means there were 162 openings for every 100 job-seekers.
